What is the difference between pearl bitter melon and ordinary bitter melon?

There are significant differences between pearl bitter melon and ordinary bitter melon in appearance, quality, yield and market value.

Appearance features:
The rind of pearl bitter melon has spots similar to black pearls. The color is darker than that of ordinary bitter melon. It is long conical in shape, with a pointed top and knob-like protrusions. In comparison, the appearance characteristics of ordinary bitter melon may be relatively simple, without obvious spots like pearl bitter melon.

Quality and taste:
Pearl bitter melon has denser flesh, less bitter taste, good quality, can withstand storage and transportation, and has strong resistance. This makes pearl bitter melon more popular in the market and suitable for long-distance transportation and long-term storage. Ordinary bitter melon may be slightly inferior in this regard.

Production volume and market value:
The yield per plant and commercial rate of pearl bitter melon are relatively high, with the yield per mu reaching about 5,000 kilograms, and the output value per mu is much higher than that of ordinary varieties. The market price is more than 10 yuan per pound, showing its high economic value.

Planting and harvesting:
The cultivation of pearl bitter melon requires specific techniques and management. For example, in eastern Guangdong, it is sown in early December for early-maturing protected areas in spring, and sown in open fields in summer and autumn from June to August. From sowing to harvesting, it takes 74 days in spring and 52 days in autumn. The full growth period takes 112 days in spring and 88 days in autumn.

To sum up, pearl bitter melon is not only more beautiful in appearance, but also superior to ordinary bitter melon in terms of quality, yield and market value, making it a more popular choice in the market.
